The SchoolPress model is profoundly linked with many areas of the school curriculum and it does not have to
be restricted to subjects which focus on literacy. The School Press model has been shown to touch on 9 elements of The Victorian Essential Learning Standards [VELS ]. School Press projects are also relevant to students' reading, spelling, grammar and punctuation skills which are fundamental to NAPLAN.
Step1: Submissions
need to be in Word format showing the grade and children's names
for each entry. Each entry should be no more than one third of an A4 page. Class or grade teachers should be responsible for checking submissions. Chapter headings may be included to create grade or theme divisions.
Step2: Once
the submissions for each class are completed they can be forwarded to the school
administrator who can then gather them into one file and mail or email them to
School Press for layout and publishing. Please also send us a good quality school logo.
Step3: About 2 weeks after you send us your submissions, School Press will publish an on line version of your book which you can use to pre sell books to parents. The funds from presales pay for the publication of the book, any surplus goes to the school. The minimum run is 100 books.
FAQ
What's the quality of the book?
The
book will be perfectly bound with a full colour, glossy 250gsm cover. The interior of the book will be printed in full colour on 115gsm white
paper.
A Proof Copy
For very large orders (eg. 300 books or more) we encourage schools to order one physical proof of the
book ahead of the printing. There is a charge of $100 for each proof.
How long is the pre-sell period?
We suggest you generate enthusiasm with the parents and children for about a one or two week pre-sale period to allow you to collect sufficient funds for the printing deposit.
How long does it take to print the books?
The printing will take 4 to 6 weeks from when the online mock up or
physical proof copy is approved.
Does it need a lot
of volunteer work? Teachers can easily fit the writing task into
the class curriculum.
A school administrator or volunteer will only need to
save material into a class folder and everything needs to be compiled into one
file before sending it to School Press.
How
many books do we need to order?
The
minimum order for each print run is 100 because of the amount of work which
is required for set up and layout.
Can
our school include children's photos? Privacy laws require parental
consent before a child's photo can be published so generally we do not publish
children's pictures, we only include their name
and grade alongside the work which they have submitted. Are
there any hidden costs?
A small deposit of $100 is required at the commencement of every project. A printing deposit is required before
we can go to press but this is normally covered via pre-sales of the book.
This deposit will be deducted from the final invoice. The balance of any payment due to School Press is required within 14 days of delivery of the books.
In almost every situation the school will have a surplus from the sale of the books and this is the fundraising component.
When
is a good time to do a fundraiser?
Children's books can be used as a way to celebrate special occasions
such as a final year, an anniversary or open day and they are popular
gifts for Christmas, Mother's Day or Father's Day. They can be used at anytime
of the year!
